At The Nurses Lounge of Central Arkansas, Nurses Week is not just a celebration—it’s a statement.
By Asha Taylor, RN on May 10, 2025

This past Friday night, under the glow of a brilliantly lit Simmons Bank tower in downtown Little Rock, we gathered with nurses from across the region to commemorate the work we do, the lives we touch, and the power we hold as professionals and people. The building shone blue in our honor, but more importantly, we showed up—present, proud, and powerful.
Why Nurses Week Deserves More Than Pizza and Candy
Every May, health systems across the country scramble to “celebrate” their nurses. And while a slice of pizza or a bag of candy may be a kind gesture, we have to ask:
Is this really the best we can do for the people who save lives every day?
Don’t get us wrong—we’ll never turn down a treat. But token gifts can’t replace meaningful recognition. Nurses are clinical leaders, innovators, and the backbone of every healthcare facility. We navigate trauma, advocate for patients, and manage the emotional weight of the work while delivering care with empathy and excellence.
Yet, year after year, many nurses are left feeling disappointed or invisible during the one week meant to spotlight their value.

Take Back the Narrative: Nurses Week Belongs to Us
This is where the shift begins.
Nurses Week should be owned by nurses. Not in the hands of hospital executives. Not on the terms of budget committees. But designed by and for the people who walk the floors, comfort the families, and resuscitate the patients.
At The Nurses Lounge of Central Arkansas, we believe that if we want a better Nurses Week, we must create it ourselves. That means:
- Organizing peer-led celebrations
- Collaborating with community partners who see our value
- Sharing stories that reflect our impact
- Uplifting each other professionally, socially, and emotionally
What We Did at Simmons Bank
Our photo shoot and community gathering at Simmons Bank was more than a photo op—it was a visual declaration of nurse empowerment. The tower lit in blue wasn’t just a gesture from the bank—it was a beacon of recognition in the heart of the city. And we made sure nurses were centered, seen, and celebrated.
Nurses came dressed in scrubs and business casual, sharing laughs, stories, and capturing moments that will live far beyond a single week.
A New Standard Starts Here
Let this be a call to every nurse reading this:
📢 Don’t wait to be celebrated—celebrate yourself and your fellow nurses.
📢 Don’t leave your recognition to chance—create the space for it.
📢 Don’t let disappointment win—build a new tradition.
At The Nurses Lounge of Central Arkansas, we’re not waiting around for better. We’re building it—loudly, proudly, and in full color.
Join us.
