An Inside The Lounge – Nurses Who Inspire Feature
Some clinicians walk into a room and instantly set people at ease. Others carry a quiet strength that reassures both colleagues and patients. And then there are those rare few—like Tramon Hunnicutt, MSN, MHA, CRNA—whose presence reflects purpose, compassion, and a calling larger than themselves.

Raised in the small town of Emerson, Arkansas, Tramon’s beginnings were humble, but foundational. Growing up in a place with limited representation taught him how to stand confidently in spaces where he might be the only one. It also grounded him in faith, an anchor that would guide his academic pursuits, career decisions, and the remarkable journey that followed.
Today, Tramon is a respected CRNA whose clinical excellence, cultural awareness, and spiritual alignment shape every patient encounter. But his story is not one of straight lines. It is a story of God-led detours, unexpected callings, personal reinvention, and a willingness to say “yes” to destiny even when the path seemed intimidating.
From Pharmacy Aspirations to Finding His Calling in Nursing
Tramon did not set out to become a nurse. In fact, he resisted the idea entirely.
“This is the craziest story…” he recalls.
Originally a pharmacy major with hopes of becoming a pharmacist, Tramon worked in a local grocery store where he occasionally picked up shifts in the pharmacy. It didn’t take long for him to realize pharmacy wasn’t his calling. At the time, he was majoring in biology with a chemistry minor—still nowhere near considering nursing.
Then, one afternoon in microbiology class, everything changed.
His classmate leaned over and casually asked,
“Hey Tramon, I am going to nursing school, do you want to go?”
It wasn’t the first time someone had planted that seed. Nursing instructors who shopped at the grocery store had already asked if he’d ever considered it. His aunt had mentioned she was thinking about becoming a nurse. Still, he was dead set against the idea.
But in that simple moment, without overthinking, he replied:
“Yeah, I’ll go.”
That was their only conversation about it. He walked out of class not knowing his entire life had just pivoted onto a new and extraordinary path.

Nursing opened doors he never imagined. Anesthesia opened even more. It created opportunities to build wealth, step confidently into real estate investing, and expand the vision he held for his life. Today, Tramon owns eight properties—a milestone he once only dreamed about, and a testament to what obedience, discipline, and purpose can build.
A Calling Confirmed Through Faith
While working in healthcare administration, Tramon knew something was missing. He was unfulfilled clinically and felt misaligned professionally. Then came a dream—standing in line for student aid next to men pursuing anesthesia school. He woke up with a clarity that startled him.
Despite initial doubts, he asked God for signs.
And the signs came—through church sermons, conversations with friends, even television. Over and over, the message was the same: This is your path.
Obedience led him to CRNA school. Faith carried him through it. And in 2021, he crossed the stage with a lesson that continues to guide his practice: cultural awareness matters, representation matters, and compassion grounded in purpose changes everything.
Cape Girardeau: The Assignment That Became a Family
Of all the places Tramon has practiced, Cape Girardeau holds a special place in his heart. His farewell message—thanking colleagues for the memories, teamwork, and support—reads like a love letter to a community that truly embraced him.
For Tramon, the environment matters as much as the work itself. As he often says,“It is important to me to like where I work. Money has a high priority, but working in an inherently stressful career, my peace of mind while in the workplace is at the top of the list.”

Cape offered exactly that—peace of mind, genuine friendships, openness, and a sense of home just a short drive from Arkansas. It gave him proximity to family, a supportive community, and a workplace culture that reminded him that in a demanding specialty, being somewhere you feel valued is truly priceless.
Recognition, Leadership & Representing the Masses
Over the years, Tramon has been spotlighted by healthcare organizations for his professionalism, skill, and teamwork. Each recognition humbles him, but also carries weight. Coming from a close-knit small town taught him how much his journey means to others watching from afar.
Though he never asked to represent the masses, he embraces the responsibility with integrity, humility, and honor.

Early in his career, Tramon admits he focused on impressing colleagues—keeping his patient rooms immaculate, tending to details others could visibly see, and striving to meet the expectations of administration and peers. But everything shifted the moment he aligned his practice with a higher purpose. As he explains:
“Initially, I entered my career pleasing my colleagues… Once I started seeking GOD approval, all the other things I thought I wanted, came. I remember the first time other services sought my opinion on the care of their patients; caring for my colleagues’ loved one is a huge compliment to me, but inside it was an outward expression of my obedience. So, my approach is to please GOD in my practice, and I WIN every time.”

What guides his practice today is simple: pleasing God.
And when he made that shift, everything else: respect, trust, leadership, and influence naturally followed.
Mission Work & Global Perspective
Tramon’s service extends far beyond U.S. borders. His medical mission to Peru offered a profound perspective shift, one that taught him to distinguish true hardship from “first-world problems.” It strengthened his belief in using one’s gifts to help others and reminded him why healthcare is a calling, not just a career.
His mission work isn’t over. With invitations to Honduras, Cameroon, the Philippines, and more, Tramon is committed to serving communities around the world.
A Traveler at Heart and a Student of Humanity
Travel isn’t just a hobby for Tramon it’s a lifestyle and a lens through which he understands people. As he puts it,

“I love to explore different cultures, food, clothes/fashion, or overall experiences. There is a whole world out there, and we should see it.”
Exploring new environments has broadened his worldview and deepened his compassion, not just personally, but clinically. Practicing anesthesia across the country has shown him how geography, culture, climate, and even lifestyle can influence anesthetic needs in ways many don’t realize.
In his words:
“I’ve delivered anesthesia across different regions of the country, and it’s surprising how much location influences anesthetic needs. Factors patients don’t usually consider, like how much sun they get or the prevalence of certain substances in the area—can change how much anesthesia someone requires. It’s a reminder of why it’s so important to be completely honest with your anesthesia provider.”
This cultural and regional awareness makes him not only a highly skilled clinician, but a deeply intuitive one—able to understand patients beyond the chart and anticipate needs rooted in their lived experiences.
Books, Food, and the Power of Perspective
As a longtime member of the Black Folx Book Club, Tramon reads widely and intentionally. The group meets every fourth Sunday via Zoom, and recently celebrated five years together. Each month, a different member chooses the book, giving everyone a chance to broaden their perspectives through one another’s selections.
One book outside of the club made a profound impact on him: Rich Dad, Poor Dad—a mindset-shifting read that transformed how he viewed money, risk, and generational opportunity.
He’s also a self-proclaimed foodie, always seeking out local dishes wherever he travels. Whether the meal is unforgettable or… memorable for other reasons, he embraces every bite as part of the adventure.
Encouragement for Aspiring CRNAs
For nurses who fear anesthesia school is “too hard” or that they’re “not smart enough,” Tramon offers heartfelt reassurance:
“You can do it. Just do it.”
He knows the journey is intimidating, but also knows it is absolutely possible, one exam and one step at a time.
He is currently pursuing his DNP at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE), while working full-time and still finds joy, purpose, and passion in the process.
Walking Into the OR as Representation
Only a 10% of anesthesia providers in the U.S. represent communities of color, and an even smaller fraction, about 3% are Black. For many patients, seeing Tramon walk into the room is not just reassuring… it’s meaningful, affirming, and rare.

As he explains:
“I’ve found that I give people clarity by answering all of their anesthesia questions. Even just walking into the room brings my patients immediate comfort. I believe in being transparent and setting expectations to help alleviate anxiety.”
He brings clarity, reassurance, and calm to his patients—meeting them in one of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. Offering not only clinical expertise and a sense of safety that extends far beyond the procedure, he exhibits cultural competence and integrity.
His Final Message to Future Nurses & CRNAs
Now practicing in Illinois, Tramon is expanding his clinical expertise through exposure to a wider range of surgeries and evidence-based practices. He thrives in environments that welcome innovation and allow him to deliver the highest standard of care.
For Tramon, impact is not measured by titles, but by courage. His message to aspiring providers is simple, powerful, and consistent with how he lives:
“Any program that requires a license is rigorous, but doable. Take one test at a time. You will be confident when you enter practice. I’m here to help.”
His commitment to uplifting the next generation is genuine and personal. As he emphasizes,
“I am available via email, and willing to have inspiring anesthesia providers follow me.”
